When I play piano, most of the time I am improvising. What does that mean?
I take the chords of a song and go with the flow without much of a plan. I’ve played the songs many times in different ways and styles.
This video is a great example of a discovery I made on the spot. I learned this blues groove when I was in New Orleans and I instantly combined it with the melody of Caravan (a Jazz standard) on the spot, and then jumped into The Entertainer by Scott Joplin. For me, this was an interesting discovery on the spot.

I was playing in the middle of Royal Street in New Orleans when this man and his son came up to me. The man asked me if his son could play my piano. I always welcome anyone to come play my piano and this was a real treat.
